Why WHMCS businesses leave 2Checkout
Most reasons come down to who owns the renewal and how long the money takes. These six push WHMCS businesses to look elsewhere.
01
Customers pay on 2Checkout's page
WHMCS ships 2Checkout as a third-party gateway: the client leaves your site to pay. With the old inline style retired, every payment runs on 2Checkout's hosted page.

With Whop: Customers pay on your WHMCS site, in your theme. A bank or payment app that needs its own screen sends them straight back.
02
Renewals are 2Checkout subscriptions
WHMCS keeps no card for 2Checkout: renewals run as 2Checkout subscriptions. WHMCS also turns off Attempt Capture, its button for charging a saved card, on every third-party gateway.
Source: WHMCS's payment gateway docs, 2026
With Whop: The card is saved as a WHMCS Pay Method that WHMCS charges at renewal, and Attempt Capture works. If the bank asks for authentication, the client pays by hand.
03
Every account is reviewed by hand first
2Checkout's underwriting team reviews each new account manually before it can sell. It asks for tax IDs, proof of address and owners' national IDs for a soft credit check.
Source: 2Checkout's account activation guide, 2026
With Whop: You can start selling, with a limited set of payment methods, before Whop verifies you. Withdrawals wait for verification.
04
A 90-day reserve and weekly payouts
2Checkout holds a risk-based share of your sales on a rolling 90-day basis. The rest pays out weekly once the balance reaches $50, and each wire costs $15.
Source: 2Checkout's payouts documentation, 2026
With Whop: Card sales are ready to withdraw in about two business days once Whop has verified your business; timing varies by country and account. Whop can hold a reserve too.
05
Fees start at 3.5% + $0.35
A sale costs 3.5% + $0.35 on 2Sell, the entry plan, or 4.5% + $0.45 on 2Subscribe. Payments from abroad add 2%, unless your business is registered in one of 23 exempt countries, the US and UK among them.

With Whop: A base rate of 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card. Whop also lists $0.03 for 3D Secure and $0.07 for fraud screening per payment, and on foreign cards a US business pays less on 2Sell.
06
Paid renewals that never reached the invoice
In January 2022, a host said WHMCS recorded only one of the two renewal messages for a service and its add-on, a bug the poster said WHMCS had logged in 2020 and still hadn't fixed. In another thread, from October 2022, 2Checkout stopped sending renewal messages for weeks; WHMCS's product manager confirmed the fault was 2Checkout's. Both posters applied payments by hand.

With Whop: No outside subscription has to report the renewal. WHMCS's cron charges the saved card, and the invoice turns Paid once Whop confirms.
2Checkout alternatives for WHMCS, ranked
Whop ranks first for most WHMCS businesses leaving 2Checkout; each of the others fits a narrower case. Whop is also my pick for the best WHMCS payment gateway overall. Here is that ranking without 2Checkout.

Sources: published US base rates, October 2026, from Whop's fee schedule and each provider's pricing page.
- Whop. Customers pay on your WHMCS site, WHMCS charges saved cards at renewal, and the US base rate is below 2Sell's, in a free module.
- Stripe. Bundled, with saved cards and 3D Secure, in Stripe's 44 signup countries; my Stripe alternatives for WHMCS page compares it with Whop.
- PayPal Payments. Bundled, and it saves PayPal accounts for renewals where PayPal approves you. A good second button, but a PayPal Checkout payment costs more than a card on Whop or Stripe.
- Authorize.net. Its CIM module keeps cards at Authorize.net for WHMCS to charge, if you already have a merchant account. Every plan costs $25 a month before card fees.
Also an option: GoCardless renews by bank debit in 8 invoice currencies, but takes no cards and can't refund from WHMCS.
Not ranked: Paddle is the merchant-of-record route, with no WHMCS module and a policy written for software companies. WHMCS's only Mollie module takes one-time iDEAL payments, and WHMCS 9.0 bundles no Braintree module.
The 2Checkout module WHMCS ships
WHMCS ships one 2Checkout module, named 2CheckOut, and it is still current in WHMCS 9.0 and 8.13.
| Module | Status by WHMCS version | Supports | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | 8.13 | One-time | Renewals | Refunds | 3D Secure | |
| 2CheckOut Third-Party | Current | Current | Yes | 2Checkout subscriptions | Yes | No |
| Paid on 2Checkout's own page; no card saved in WHMCS. WHMCS can't charge a stored card, so Attempt Capture is off. 2Checkout retired the old Inline Checkout style; the module uses Standard Checkout. | ||||||
- 2Checkout also publishes its own WHMCS connector on GitHub, last released in February 2024. WHMCS doesn't document it.
Sources: WHMCS's 2CheckOut module docs, checked October 5, 2026.
What changed, and what still applies
- The Checkout Style setting is on its way out. WHMCS plans to remove it now that the module always uses Standard Checkout, and choosing Inline can crash Chrome.
- The last change shipped in WHMCS 8.11. It added support for 2Checkout's SHA verification hashes. The 8.12, 8.13 and 9.0 change logs list nothing for 2Checkout.
- 2Checkout's own connector is separate. It works only with 2Sell and 2Subscribe accounts, and nothing public shows it tested on WHMCS 9.
- Other currencies are converted first. Convert To For Processing must match your 2Checkout account currency, so WHMCS converts other invoices at its own exchange rates. Whop charges each invoice in its own currency; the module supports 77 invoice currencies.
Whop vs 2Checkout for WHMCS
Whop wins on domestic cards and on where your customers pay; 2Sell wins on foreign cards for a business in one of its 23 exempt countries. Here is every criterion side by side.
| Whop | 2Checkout (Verifone) | |
|---|---|---|
| Card fee per sale | 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card, no monthly fee. Whop also lists $0.03 for 3D Secure and $0.07 for fraud screening per payment. | 2Sell: 3.5% + $0.35 per successful sale; 2Subscribe: 4.5% + $0.45. Local payment methods are priced separately. |
| International cards and currency conversion | +1.5% for international cards, +1% if currency conversion applies. | +2% cross-border fee unless the business is registered in one of 23 exempt countries (including the US, UK, Canada and Australia); a conversion mark-up applies when order and payout currencies differ. |
| Where the business can be based | Anywhere except Whop's sanctions list: 216 countries and territories. Payout methods vary by country. | Manual underwriting before the first sale. 2Sell and 2Subscribe are not offered to businesses in 46 listed countries and territories, nor in restricted jurisdictions. |
| Payout timing | Card sales are ready to withdraw in about two business days (timing varies by country and account). Withdrawals need a completed Whop verification. | Weekly by default once the balance reaches $50; wire transfers cost $15. A risk-based share of sales is held on a rolling 90-day basis. |
| Automatic renewals in WHMCS | WHMCS's cron charges the saved card on each renewal (Whop Payments). If the bank asks for authentication, the client pays by hand. | 2Checkout runs its own subscriptions and its notifications mark renewal invoices paid. WHMCS cannot charge a stored card. |
| Saved cards | Native WHMCS Pay Methods, saved at checkout or with Save a card, by the client or an admin. Card numbers stay with Whop. | None in WHMCS: no Pay Method, no Attempt Capture, no remote card update or AddPayMethod. |
| Refunds from the WHMCS invoice | Full or partial refunds from the WHMCS invoice; refunds made in Whop sync back. Whole-unit currencies refund in full only. | Full and partial refunds from WHMCS; 2Checkout allows self-serve refunds for three months, then up to a year through 2Checkout. |
| Disputes | Handled in Whop, $15 per dispute. WHMCS gets a private staff note and, if you set one up, a staff alert. | Handled in 2Checkout, with a per-dispute fee set in your contract (2Checkout's example: $36, or $50 at a 0.65%+ chargeback rate). No reversals in the WHMCS module. |
| Tax handling | WHMCS calculates invoice tax and you remit it. The module doesn't use Whop's merchant-of-record tax handling. | WHMCS calculates invoice tax and you remit it. 2Checkout's merchant-of-record plan, 2Monetize, is not offered to WHMCS or other third-party carts. |
| Test environment | A Whop Sandbox business with test cards; Sandbox and Live keep separate settings. Apple Pay and Google Pay don't run in Sandbox. | Demo mode: set 2Checkout's Demo Setting and tick demo mode in WHMCS; it needs valid card data and charges nothing. |
| WHMCS module | Free third-party module, not bundled with WHMCS. Tested on WHMCS 8.13.7, 9.0.7 and 9.0.8. | Bundled 2CheckOut module (self-hosted, Cloud Growth and Expansion). 2Checkout also publishes a free connector on GitHub, last released February 2024. |
| Before you can charge | Paste a Whop API key and click Save Changes. You need a public HTTPS System URL and WHMCS's cron; you can sell before Whop finishes verifying you. | Pass 2Checkout's manual underwriting, then enter the merchant code, API user and INS secret word, and set the INS and return URLs in 2Checkout. |
| Support | George, the module's developer, by Telegram or email; Whop for the account, payouts and disputes. | WHMCS for the bundled module; 2Checkout (Verifone) by email and chat for the account, payouts and risk. |

What one card payment costs
For a US business, Whop's base rate is lower on domestic cards, and 2Sell's on foreign ones, since Whop adds 1.5% for international cards.
| Invoice | Whop, domestic card | Whop, foreign card | 2Sell, any card |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $0.57 | $0.72 | $0.70 |
| $50 | $1.65 | $2.40 | $2.10 |
| $200 | $5.70 | $8.70 | $7.35 |
Base rates only: no currency conversion, and none of Whop's per-payment 3D Secure or fraud-screening fees.
Where Whop wins
- Where customers pay. On your WHMCS site, in your theme, not on 2Checkout's page.
- Renewals inside WHMCS. WHMCS charges the saved card instead of waiting for 2Checkout's renewal message.
- Domestic cards. 2.7% + $0.30 against 2Sell's 3.5% + $0.35: $1.65 instead of $2.10 on $50.
- Where your business can be. Everywhere but a short sanctions list. 2Sell and 2Subscribe aren't offered to businesses in 46 listed places, Ghana and Qatar among them. See every Whop country.
Where 2Checkout wins
- Foreign cards in exempt countries. With no cross-border fee, a US business pays $2.10 on 2Sell for a $50 foreign card, against $2.40 on Whop.
- Fraud screening and 3D Secure included. 2Checkout charges nothing extra for fraud protection, and its pricing page lists 3D Secure on every plan.
- Bundled with WHMCS. Nothing to install, and WHMCS supports it. Whop's is a free third-party module.
Refunds are close to a tie: both refund in full or in part from the WHMCS invoice, though 2Checkout's self-serve window closes after three months.
How to switch from 2Checkout without losing renewals
Run Whop beside 2Checkout, move each client at their next invoice, and cancel their 2Checkout subscription before it bills again. Nothing is imported, since WHMCS holds no 2Checkout cards, and 2CheckOut stays active, just hidden, for past payments.
Never deactivate 2CheckOut to switch. WHMCS reassigns a deactivated gateway's services, invoices, transactions and pay methods to the gateway you pick (WHMCS's gateway docs). Old 2Checkout payments would then be labeled Whop, and Whop can't refund them.
- 01
List your 2Checkout subscriptions
List the active subscriptions in 2Checkout. In WHMCS, find the services and unpaid invoices on 2CheckOut, and note which clients pay by hand.
- 02
Install Whop beside 2Checkout
Install the free module, test a payment in Whop's Sandbox, then go Live. In Payment Gateways, turn Show on Order Form on for Whop Payments and off for 2CheckOut. 2CheckOut stays active, just hidden from the order form.
- 03
Move each client at their next invoice
Set the client's service and upcoming invoice to Whop Payments. The client pays with a card that Whop Payments can save; check Payment Methods for it before relying on automatic collection.
- 04
Cancel the subscription at 2Checkout
Hiding 2CheckOut doesn't stop a 2Checkout subscription. Before it bills again, open it in 2Checkout's Subscriptions management, choose Stop automatic billing, then Now, and tick Cancel subscription when automatic billing ends, or the client may pay twice.
- 05
Watch one full renewal cycle
Confirm the next renewal is paid once, by Whop, with no 2Checkout renewal message in the Gateway Log. Then move the next group.
- 06
Keep old payments with 2Checkout
Refund a 2Checkout payment from its original invoice within three months; the refund still goes through 2Checkout. From three to twelve months, ask 2Checkout. Keep 2CheckOut active until nothing is left to refund or dispute.
The switch guide in the module's docs (opens in a new tab) covers the same steps for any gateway.
2Checkout alternative questions
Does WHMCS still support 2Checkout?
Yes. WHMCS 9.0 and 8.13 bundle the 2CheckOut module, current in both, and it sends customers to 2Checkout's own page. Only the old Inline Checkout style is gone, retired by 2Checkout.
Can I move my 2Checkout subscriptions and cards to Whop?
No. Nothing is imported, and the cards behind 2Checkout subscriptions stay at 2Checkout. Each client saves a new card when they pay a Whop invoice, and you cancel their subscription at 2Checkout.
Is 2Checkout a merchant of record for my WHMCS store?
No. 2Checkout takes on VAT and sales tax as merchant of record only on 2Monetize, which it doesn't offer to WHMCS or other third-party carts. With 2Checkout or Whop, WHMCS calculates the tax and you remit it.
Is Whop cheaper than 2Checkout?
On domestic cards, yes, on base rates: a $50 invoice costs $1.65 on Whop and $2.10 on 2Sell. On foreign cards, a US business pays less on 2Sell. Whop also lists $0.03 for 3D Secure and $0.07 for fraud screening per payment.
How quickly does 2Checkout pay out?
Weekly by default, once the balance reaches $50, with $15 per wire and a share held for a rolling 90 days. Whop card sales are ready to withdraw in about two business days after verification, though timing varies by country and account.
Can I run 2Checkout and Whop side by side?
Yes. Keep 2CheckOut active for existing subscriptions and refunds, turn off its Show on Order Form, and let new orders use Whop.
