Why WHMCS businesses leave Stripe
Most reasons come down to money and reach, not the checkout. Stripe works well for many WHMCS shops; these four problems push some of them to look elsewhere.
01
Dispute fees add up, and support is hard to reach
A host weighing a move off Stripe said stolen cards still got through on VPS and domain orders despite Radar and extra rules. They had never won an appeal, paid £20 per dispute, and found "no real support whatsoever."
Source: a December 2024 thread on the WHMCS community forum
With Whop: $15 per dispute, with no countered fee listed. No gateway stops stolen cards, Whop included.
02
Signup opens in only 44 countries
Stripe opens self-serve signup in 44 countries. India and Indonesia are by invitation, and five African markets go through Paystack, a separate account. Everywhere else, a WHMCS business can't open a Stripe account.
Source: Stripe's country list, October 2026
With Whop: A Whop business can be based in 216 countries and territories, everywhere but a short sanctions list. See every Whop country.
03
The first payout takes 7 to 14 days
Stripe says the first payout typically arrives 7 to 14 days after your first live payment, depending on your industry, country and risk. After that, US payouts take 2 business days.
Source: Stripe's payouts documentation, October 2026
With Whop: Card sales are ready to withdraw in about two business days once Whop has verified your business; timing varies by country and account.
04
Reserves can hold part of your balance
Stripe can keep a share of your funds as a fixed or rolling reserve. Its triggers include elevated dispute activity and a sudden, unexplained jump in volume, and you can appeal only when Stripe offers it.
Source: Stripe's reserves FAQ, October 2026
With Whop: Whop holds reserves too. It doesn't suspend accounts over ordinary chargebacks; a suspension has a documented 30-day appeal with human review, and the account's funds are held for 120 days.

- Whop. The only option here that combines saved-card renewals WHMCS collects, a lower US base rate than Stripe and a business almost anywhere, in a free module.
- PayPal Payments. Bundled with WHMCS, and it saves PayPal accounts for renewals where PayPal approves your business. A good second button, but a PayPal Checkout payment costs more than a card on Whop or Stripe. My PayPal alternatives for WHMCS page compares it with Whop.
- Authorize.net. Bundled modules that save cards, for a business that already has a merchant account. Every plan costs $25 a month before card fees.
- 2Checkout. Bundled and hosted, with no merchant account of your own. Renewals run as 2Checkout subscriptions, with no saved card in WHMCS.
- GoCardless. Cheap renewals by bank debit in 8 invoice currencies. It doesn't take cards, and refunds happen outside WHMCS.
Not ranked: WHMCS's only Mollie module takes one-time iDEAL payments, and WHMCS 9.0 bundles no Braintree or Paddle module.
The Stripe modules WHMCS ships
WHMCS ships four Stripe modules. Its recommended one, Stripe Dynamic Payments, arrived in WHMCS 9.0.3 in March 2026, and the WHMCS 9.1 beta deprecates the other three.
| Module | Status by WHMCS version | Supports | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | 8.13 | 9.1 beta | One-time | Renewals | Refunds | 3D Secure | |
| Stripe Dynamic Payments Token | Recommended | Not available | Recommended | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Card numbers stay at Stripe, typed into Stripe Elements on your WHMCS page. Added in WHMCS 9.0.3 (March 31, 2026). Shows the methods you enable in Stripe. Clients add cards in the client area only, not the admin area. | |||||||
| Stripe Token | Current | Current | Deprecated | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Card numbers stay at Stripe, typed into Stripe Elements. The older card module. Apple Pay and Google Pay through its Payment Request Buttons setting. Not compatible with the Modern or Boxes order forms. | |||||||
| Stripe ACH Token | Current | Current | Deprecated | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| US bank accounts, saved at Stripe. Invoices sit in Payment Pending for up to five days. No disputes in WHMCS. | |||||||
| Stripe SEPA Token | Current | Current | Deprecated | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| SEPA Direct Debit mandates, saved at Stripe. EUR only. Payment Pending for up to 14 business days. No disputes in WHMCS. | |||||||
- WHMCS ships no module called Stripe Checkout; modules with that name are third-party.

What changed in 2026
- Dynamic Payments is new. It arrived in 9.0.3 on March 31, 2026, not with 9.0.0, and WHMCS 8.13 doesn't have it. It shows the payment methods you enable in Stripe, but only clients can add a card, from the client area.
- The 9.1 beta deprecates the rest. WHMCS 9.1, in beta since September 30, 2026, marks Stripe, Stripe ACH and Stripe SEPA deprecated. Its migration tool moves their saved payment methods to Dynamic Payments on the same Stripe account, and nowhere else.
- Renewals work the same on every card module. WHMCS charges the saved Stripe card itself, so Stripe runs no subscription. A renewal that needs bank authentication (SCA) is declined, and the client pays by hand.
Whop vs Stripe for WHMCS
Whop wins on the US base rate and on where your business can be; Stripe wins on European rates and bundled extras. Here is every criterion side by side.
| Whop | Stripe | |
|---|---|---|
| Card fee per sale | 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card, no monthly fee. Whop also lists $0.03 for 3D Secure and $0.07 for fraud screening per payment. | US: 2.9% + $0.30 per domestic card. EEA: 1.5% + €0.25 and UK: 1.5% + 20p for standard domestic cards. |
| International cards and currency conversion | +1.5% for international cards, +1% if currency conversion applies. | US: +1.5% for international cards, +1% if currency conversion applies. EEA and UK accounts: 2.5% to 3.15% plus the fixed fee, +2% conversion. |
| Where the business can be based | Anywhere except Whop's sanctions list: 216 countries and territories. Payout methods vary by country. | Self-serve signup in 44 countries. India and Indonesia by invitation; five African markets only through Paystack. |
| Payout timing | Card sales are ready to withdraw in about two business days (timing varies by country and account). Withdrawals need a completed Whop verification. | First payout typically 7 to 14 days after the first live payment, then 2 business days in the US and 3 in most of Europe. |
| Automatic renewals in WHMCS | WHMCS's cron charges the saved card on each renewal (Whop Payments). If the bank asks for authentication, the client pays by hand. | WHMCS charges the saved Stripe card on each renewal. If the bank requires SCA, the charge is declined and the client pays by hand. |
| Saved cards | Native WHMCS Pay Methods, saved at checkout or with Save a card, by the client or an admin. Card numbers stay with Whop. | Stripe tokens saved as WHMCS Pay Methods. Stripe Dynamic Payments adds them in the client area only, not the admin area. |
| Refunds from the WHMCS invoice | Full or partial refunds from the WHMCS invoice; refunds made in Whop sync back. Whole-unit currencies refund in full only. | Full or partial refunds from the WHMCS invoice through Stripe. Stripe keeps the original processing fee. |
| Disputes | Handled in Whop, $15 per dispute. WHMCS gets a private staff note and, if you set one up, a staff alert. | Stripe card disputes appear in WHMCS (Billing > Disputes), with evidence submitted from WHMCS. US: $15 per dispute, plus $15 if you counter and lose. |
| Tax handling | WHMCS calculates invoice tax and you remit it. The module doesn't use Whop's merchant-of-record tax handling. | WHMCS calculates invoice tax. The WHMCS Stripe modules don't use Stripe Tax. |
| Test environment | A Whop Sandbox business with test cards; Sandbox and Live keep separate settings. Apple Pay and Google Pay don't run in Sandbox. | Stripe test-mode keys. WHMCS detects test or live from the key; there is no separate Test Mode setting. |
| WHMCS module | Free third-party module, not bundled with WHMCS. Tested on WHMCS 8.13.7, 9.0.7 and 9.0.8. | Bundled with WHMCS. Stripe Dynamic Payments since 9.0.3; the older Stripe, ACH and SEPA modules still ship (deprecated in the 9.1 beta). |
| Before you can charge | Paste a Whop API key and click Save Changes. You need a public HTTPS System URL and WHMCS's cron; you can sell before Whop finishes verifying you. | Create restricted API keys with the WHMCS app in Stripe, paste them and Save Changes; WHMCS creates the webhook. |
| Support | George, the module's developer, by Telegram or email; Whop for the account, payouts and disputes. | WHMCS for the bundled module; Stripe for the account, payouts and disputes. |

Where Whop wins
- The US base rate. 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card, against Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30.
- Where your business can be. 216 countries and territories, against Stripe's 44 signup countries.
- The first payout. Whop card sales are ready to withdraw in about two business days (timing varies by country and account); Stripe's first payout typically takes 7 to 14 days.
- Saving cards for clients. An admin can open the Save a card form for a client. With Dynamic Payments, only the client can add a card.
Where Stripe wins
- European rates. On an EEA or UK Stripe account, standard domestic cards cost 1.5% plus a fixed fee, below Whop's rate.
- 3D Secure and fraud screening included. Whop lists $0.03 and $0.07 per payment for them, which can cancel its lead on invoices under about $50.
- Instant payouts. 1.5% (minimum 50¢), against Whop's 4% + $1.
- Disputes inside WHMCS. You answer Stripe card disputes at Billing > Disputes. With Whop you handle them in Whop, and WHMCS gets a private staff note.
Renewals are a tie: WHMCS charges the saved card on both, and a renewal that needs SCA fails on both until the client pays by hand.
How to switch from Stripe without losing renewals
Run Whop beside Stripe and move each client at their next renewal. Nothing is imported, and Stripe stays active, just hidden, for the payments it already collected.
Never deactivate Stripe to switch. WHMCS reassigns a deactivated gateway's services, invoices, transactions and pay methods to the gateway you pick (WHMCS's gateway docs). Old Stripe payments would then be labeled Whop, and Whop can't refund them.
- 01
Install Whop beside Stripe
Install the free module, connect a Whop Sandbox business and test a payment. Then connect your Live business. Stripe keeps running the whole time.
- 02
Send new orders to Whop
In Payment Gateways, turn Show on Order Form on for Whop Payments and off for Stripe. Stripe stays active, just hidden from the order form.
- 03
Move each client at their next renewal
A Stripe card can't become a Whop card. The client pays their next invoice with Whop Payments and saves the card, or adds one under Payment Methods; you can open the same Save a card form with Add Credit Card. Once the Whop card is listed, set the client, the service and any upcoming invoice to Whop Payments.
- 04
Cancel anything Stripe bills on its own
WHMCS's Stripe modules create no Stripe subscriptions, but a third-party module or a Stripe Billing setup might. Check Stripe's dashboard and cancel them there; hiding Stripe in WHMCS doesn't stop them.
- 05
Watch one full renewal cycle
Confirm the next renewal is paid once, by Whop, before you move the next group of clients.
- 06
Keep old payments with Stripe
Refund a Stripe payment from its original invoice with Refund through Gateway, which still goes to Stripe, and answer its disputes in Stripe. Keep Stripe active until its last payments are past their refund and dispute windows.
The switch guide in the module's docs (opens in a new tab) covers the same steps for any gateway.
Stripe alternative questions
Can I move my saved Stripe cards to Whop?
No. Stripe keeps the card tokens, and they only work with the Stripe account that created them. Each client pays their next invoice with Whop Payments, which can save the card, and WHMCS collects automatically from then on.
Can I run Stripe and Whop side by side in WHMCS?
Yes. WHMCS runs several gateways at once. Keep Stripe active for the clients who use it, and use Show on Order Form to send new orders to Whop.
Is Whop cheaper than Stripe?
On US list prices, Whop's base card rate is 2.7% + $0.30 against Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30. Whop lists separate per-payment fees for 3D Secure ($0.03) and fraud screening ($0.07), which Stripe includes, and Stripe's EEA and UK domestic rates are lower.
Which countries can use Whop but not Stripe?
Stripe opens self-serve signup in 44 countries. A Whop business can be based in 216 countries and territories, and 172 of them are places where Stripe doesn't open signup. The Whop country list has every one.
What happens to refunds and disputes on my old Stripe payments?
They stay with Stripe. Refund them from the original invoice while the Stripe module is still active; Whop can only refund payments Whop collected.
Should I move to Stripe Dynamic Payments instead?
If you stay on Stripe and run WHMCS 9.0.3 or later, yes: it's WHMCS's recommended Stripe module. It doesn't change Stripe's signup countries, fees or payout rules, and the 9.1 beta adds a tool to move saved cards from the older Stripe modules on the same Stripe account.
Try Whop in WHMCS before you move a single client
