Why WHMCS businesses leave PayPal
The trouble is holds, renewals and fees, not the PayPal button itself. Plenty of customers like paying with PayPal; these five problems push a WHMCS business to look elsewhere.
01
Holds and reserves can lock up your balance
PayPal can hold payments based on account tenure, past disputes or business type, new sellers included. Risk-based holds generally last up to 21 days, longer for a disputed payment, and PayPal can also place a reserve on the account.

With Whop: Card sales are ready to withdraw in about two business days once Whop has verified your business; timing varies by country and account. Whop can hold reserves too.
02
Renewals need PayPal's approval to save accounts
WHMCS can charge a PayPal account for renewals only if PayPal lets your business save payment methods. PayPal reviews each business, and its developer docs list 35 countries for it. WHMCS's own list is far longer, so check Refresh PayPal Account in WHMCS.
Source: PayPal's docs on saving payment methods, October 2026
With Whop: Whop Payments, the module's card gateway, saves cards (not PayPal accounts) in WHMCS, and a Whop business can be based in 216 countries and territories.
03
The move off PayPal Subscriptions confused shops
WHMCS deprecated PayPal Basic and PayPal Checkout, which ran PayPal Subscriptions, and moves each customer to PayPal Payments when they next pay with it. Operators feared a mass cancellation, and one got a confused support ticket 39 minutes after switching.

With Whop: There are no Whop subscriptions: WHMCS creates each renewal invoice and charges the saved card. Moving still means each customer saves a new card once.
04
The $0.49 fixed fee weighs on small renewals
In the US, a PayPal checkout payment costs 3.49% + $0.49, or $0.84 on a $10 invoice. International payments add 1.50%, and PayPal's currency conversion spread is 3.00%.
Source: PayPal's US merchant fees page, October 2026
With Whop: A base rate of 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card ($0.57 on $10), +1% for conversion. Whop also lists $0.03 for 3D Secure and $0.07 for fraud screening per payment.
05
Disputes arrive late and rarely favor services
A host received a PayPal chargeback more than 50 days after a $220 order and described sellers as powerless. PayPal gives buyers up to 180 days to file, and its Seller Protection covers services only on narrow conditions.

With Whop: $15 per dispute, handled in Whop rather than in WHMCS. No gateway stops a customer from disputing, Whop included.

- Whop. Saves cards for WHMCS renewals and can still offer PayPal through Whop Checkout, in one free module with a lower base card rate than PayPal Checkout.
- Stripe. Bundled, and its recommended Dynamic Payments module saves cards for renewals. The strongest pick in Stripe's 44 signup countries; my Stripe alternatives for WHMCS page compares it with Whop.
- Authorize.net. Bundled modules that save cards, for a business that has, or wants, a merchant account. Every plan costs $25 a month before card fees.
- 2Checkout. Bundled and hosted, with no merchant account of your own. Renewals run as 2Checkout subscriptions, and 2Sell's rate is the highest headline card fee here.
- GoCardless. Cheap renewals by bank debit in 8 invoice currencies. It doesn't take cards, and refunds happen outside WHMCS.
Not ranked: Braintree is PayPal's own card platform and isn't bundled with WHMCS, WHMCS's only Mollie module takes one-time iDEAL payments, and Paddle has no WHMCS module and would take billing away from WHMCS.
The PayPal modules WHMCS ships
WHMCS ships seven PayPal modules and recommends two. PayPal Payments and its companion, PayPal Card Payments, arrived in WHMCS 8.9; the other five are deprecated, but none has been removed.

What changed since 2024
- PayPal Payments replaced subscriptions. Since 8.9 (March 2024), it saves the customer's PayPal account, a step PayPal calls vaulting, so WHMCS charges each renewal itself.
- Basic and Checkout are deprecated. WHMCS 8.11 (September 2024) deprecated the two modules that ran PayPal Subscriptions. They still ship, and must stay active while old subscriptions run.
- The migration is gradual. When a client pays with PayPal Payments and PayPal can save their account, WHMCS cancels their old subscription. PayPal emails them a cancellation notice WHMCS can't stop.
Whop vs PayPal for WHMCS
Whop wins on the base card rate, conversion and saved-card renewals; PayPal wins with buyers who prefer it. Here is every criterion side by side.
| Whop | PayPal Payments | |
|---|---|---|
| Card fee per sale | 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card, no monthly fee. Whop also lists $0.03 for 3D Secure and $0.07 for fraud screening per payment. | US PayPal Checkout: 3.49% + $0.49. Cards: 2.99% + $0.49 standard; 2.89% + $0.29 for advanced cards, which need PayPal's approval. |
| International cards and currency conversion | +1.5% for international cards, +1% if currency conversion applies. | US account: +1.50% on international payments. PayPal's currency conversion spread is 3.00% (4.00% in some cases). |
| Where the business can be based | Anywhere except Whop's sanctions list: 216 countries and territories. Payout methods vary by country. | PayPal lists 200 markets. Saving PayPal accounts for WHMCS renewals is listed for 35 countries and needs PayPal's approval. |
| Payout timing | Card sales are ready to withdraw in about two business days (timing varies by country and account). Withdrawals need a completed Whop verification. | Funds land in your PayPal balance; standard bank withdrawal is free without conversion. Risk holds generally last up to 21 days; reserves possible. |
| Automatic renewals in WHMCS | WHMCS's cron charges the saved card on each renewal (Whop Payments). If the bank asks for authentication, the client pays by hand. | PayPal Payments: WHMCS charges the saved PayPal account or card itself. Deprecated Basic and Checkout ran PayPal Subscriptions instead. |
| Saved cards | Native WHMCS Pay Methods, saved at checkout or with Save a card, by the client or an admin. Card numbers stay with Whop. | PayPal accounts are saved on payment; cards through PayPal Card Payments when the customer ticks Save card. Only where PayPal enables vaulting. |
| Refunds from the WHMCS invoice | Full or partial refunds from the WHMCS invoice; refunds made in Whop sync back. Whole-unit currencies refund in full only. | Refunds from WHMCS on PayPal Payments and Card Payments. PayPal keeps the original fee; refunds within 180 days of payment. |
| Disputes | Handled in Whop, $15 per dispute. WHMCS gets a private staff note and, if you set one up, a staff alert. | Managed in WHMCS at Billing > Disputes. US fees: $15 per PayPal dispute ($30 high volume), $20 per card chargeback. |
| Tax handling | WHMCS calculates invoice tax and you remit it. The module doesn't use Whop's merchant-of-record tax handling. | WHMCS calculates invoice tax; the WHMCS PayPal module docs describe no tax setting. |
| Test environment | A Whop Sandbox business with test cards; Sandbox and Live keep separate settings. Apple Pay and Google Pay don't run in Sandbox. | Test Mode with a separately linked PayPal Sandbox account. |
| WHMCS module | Free third-party module, not bundled with WHMCS. Tested on WHMCS 8.13.7, 9.0.7 and 9.0.8. | Bundled with WHMCS since 8.9: PayPal Payments plus PayPal Card Payments. Five older PayPal modules are deprecated. |
| Before you can charge | Paste a Whop API key and click Save Changes. You need a public HTTPS System URL and WHMCS's cron; you can sell before Whop finishes verifying you. | HTTPS System URL and OPcache off, then Link PayPal Account. Saving payment methods needs PayPal's approval for your business. |
| Support | George, the module's developer, by Telegram or email; Whop for the account, payouts and disputes. | WHMCS for the bundled module; PayPal for the account, holds, limitations and disputes. |

Where Whop wins
- The base card rate. 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card, against PayPal Checkout's 3.49% + $0.49.
- Currency conversion. +1%, against PayPal's 3.00% conversion spread.
- Saved-card renewals. WHMCS charges the saved Whop card on each renewal. PayPal Payments saves accounts only after PayPal approves your business.
- Saving a card for a client. An admin can open the Save a card form. PayPal Card Payments saves a card only when the customer ticks Save card.
Where PayPal wins
- Buyers who want PayPal. PayPal Payments can save their PayPal account for renewals. Through Whop, PayPal is one-time only.
- Advanced card processing. If PayPal approves you, 2.89% + $0.29 nearly matches Whop's base rate and is lower on invoices under about $5.
- Disputes inside WHMCS. You manage PayPal Payments disputes at Billing > Disputes. With Whop you handle them in Whop, and WHMCS gets a private staff note.
Keep PayPal as a button
Switching doesn't mean dropping PayPal. Set it up in Whop's Settings > Payments, and customers can choose it in Whop Checkout, the module's second gateway. Whop lists PayPal at 3.49% + $0.49, the same as PayPal's own US checkout.
Those payments are one-time; renewals run on saved cards. You can also keep PayPal Payments active beside Whop, since WHMCS runs several gateways at once.
How to switch from PayPal without losing renewals
Run Whop beside PayPal, move each customer at their next renewal, and cancel their PayPal subscription the same day. Nothing is imported, and PayPal stays active, just hidden, for the payments it already collected.
Never deactivate PayPal to switch. WHMCS reassigns a deactivated gateway's services, invoices, transactions and pay methods to the gateway you pick (WHMCS's gateway docs). Payments from PayPal subscriptions still running would then reach PayPal without WHMCS recording them.
- 01
Find what collects each renewal
A Subscription ID on the service means a PayPal Basic or Checkout subscription that PayPal charges on its own schedule. A saved PayPal Payments method means WHMCS charges a vaulted account. Neither means the customer pays by hand.
- 02
Install Whop beside PayPal
Install the free module, connect a Whop Sandbox business and test a payment. Then connect your Live business, and set PayPal up in Whop if you want to keep offering it.
- 03
Send new orders to Whop
In Payment Gateways, turn Show on Order Form on for Whop Payments and off for every PayPal module. Each PayPal module stays active, just hidden from the order form.
- 04
Move each customer at their next renewal
A saved PayPal account can't become a Whop card. The customer pays an invoice with Whop Payments and saves the card, or adds one under Payment Methods. Then set the service and any unpaid invoice to Whop Payments.
- 05
Cancel their PayPal subscription the same day
Changing a service's payment method doesn't cancel its PayPal subscription, and WHMCS can't cancel them in bulk. Click Cancel Subscription on the service, or cancel it at PayPal, and check that the Subscription ID is gone. Otherwise you collect twice.
- 06
Keep PayPal for old payments
Leave PayPal active until no subscription remains and 180 days have passed since the last PayPal payment, the window for refunds and buyer claims. Refund old payments through PayPal, and watch one full renewal cycle on Whop before moving the next group.
The switch guide in the module's docs (opens in a new tab) covers the same steps for any gateway.
PayPal alternative questions
Can I keep PayPal if I switch my WHMCS gateway to Whop?
Yes. Set PayPal up in Whop's Settings > Payments, and customers can pick it in Whop Checkout. Those payments are one-time, and renewals run on saved cards through Whop Payments. You can also keep PayPal Payments active beside Whop.
Will my PayPal subscriptions move to Whop?
No. Nothing is imported, and a saved PayPal account can't become a Whop card. When you move a customer, cancel their PayPal subscription with Cancel Subscription in WHMCS or at PayPal, or you collect twice.
Is Whop cheaper than PayPal?
On US list prices, Whop's base card rate of 2.7% + $0.30 is below PayPal Checkout's 3.49% + $0.49 and PayPal's standard card rate of 2.99% + $0.49. PayPal's advanced card rate, 2.89% + $0.29, needs PayPal's approval and is lower on invoices under about $5. Whop also lists $0.03 for 3D Secure and $0.07 for fraud screening per payment.
Can WHMCS charge PayPal automatically for renewals?
Yes, with PayPal Payments, if PayPal has approved your business to save payment methods. PayPal's developer docs list 35 countries for it, and Refresh PayPal Account in WHMCS shows whether your account has access.
How long can PayPal hold my money?
PayPal says risk-based holds generally last up to 21 days, longer for a disputed payment but no more than 180 days. It can also place a reserve on a business account.
