What you need

You need WHMCS on PHP 8.3, a public HTTPS address, a running cron and a Whop business.

Requirement Detail
WHMCS Tested on 8.13.7, 9.0.7 and 9.0.8. Other 8.x and 9.x releases are likely to work the same way.
PHP 8.3
Admin access A WHMCS admin with the Configure Payment Gateways permission
System URL A public HTTPS address, set correctly in WHMCS. A subdirectory such as /billing/ is fine.
Cron WHMCS's own cron running, normally every five minutes
Outbound access HTTPS from your server to Whop
Theme Twenty-One and Six templates are included. Any other active system theme needs whop-payment.tpl and whop-complete.tpl copied into it.
Whop business Based in one of the countries Whop supports. Whop excludes only a short list, mostly countries under sanctions.
Whop API key 19 permissions: 11 for payments, plus 8 that each turn on one feature, such as refunds from WHMCS
Withdrawals A completed Whop verification. You can start selling before that.

The documentation (opens in a new tab) covers each requirement in detail.

Install in three steps

Installing takes three steps, and the third one is optional.

  1. Copy everything inside the package's upload/ folder into your WHMCS directory, keeping the folder structure.
  2. Open System Settings > Payment Gateways, activate Whop Payments, then open it again and click Save Changes. That first save creates the module's own database tables.
  3. Optionally activate Whop Checkout and click Save Changes on it. It shares the Whop Payments connection, so there is nothing extra to connect.

Activation alone does not connect Whop or make payments possible yet. The getting-started guides take you the rest of the way.

After installing: six getting-started guides

Six guides take you from a fresh install to your first live payment. All six are in the Whop Payments for WHMCS documentation (opens in a new tab):

  1. Install the module
  2. Set up a Sandbox business
  3. Connect WHMCS to Whop
  4. Test a payment
  5. Get your Live business
  6. Go live

I recommend running your first tests on a separate, private WHMCS installation connected to a Whop Sandbox business, Whop's test environment. While Sandbox is selected, only signed-in WHMCS admins can pay through Whop, and customers see both gateways as unavailable.

Updating to a new version

Updating is a file overwrite, not a migration. Your invoices, saved cards, payment history and Whop connection stay in place.

  1. Back up your WHMCS files, database and encryption configuration, and let any payment in progress finish.
  2. Replace the module files with the new version's, including whop-payment.tpl and whop-complete.tpl in every active system theme. Do not mix files from different releases.
  3. Open Whop Payments under Payment Gateways and click Save Changes. This runs the new version's setup and checks each environment that has an API key.
  4. Confirm both panels under Connection status read as you expect.

The changelog lists what changed in each version.

Good to know before you start

A few limits are worth knowing up front.

  • Nothing is imported from another gateway. Saved cards and subscriptions stay with the old one, and each customer saves a new card through Whop Payments.
  • Whop Checkout never saves a card or collects automatic renewals. Whop Payments handles saved cards and renewals.
  • 3D Secure is a request, not a guarantee. The card issuer decides whether a challenge appears.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay do not work in Sandbox. In Live they need a public HTTPS address and your domain verified for wallets in Whop, which you do yourself.
  • HUF (Hungarian forint) is not supported as an invoice currency. Nine whole-unit currencies, such as JPY, are off by default and refund in full only. The currency list has all 77.
  • Disputes are handled inside Whop. WHMCS adds a private note for your staff.

Free, and how it stays free

The module is free and adds no fee of its own. There is no paid tier. Whop's own processing fees apply to every payment, as with any Whop business.

Whop pays me a partner commission out of its own revenue when you create your Whop business through the sign-up link in the module's settings. A business you create another way works with the module in exactly the same way.
